Serrai di Sottoguda
I
SERRAI DI SOTTOGUDA
A breathtaking wonder and a temple of nature:
la Gola dei Serrai di Sottoguda...
the unique Gorge of Serrai was caused by a strong earthquake
shock and, subsequently, by the water erosion. Run through by
the stream Pettorina, it stretches for about 2 km, from
Sottoguda to Malga Ciapela, at the foot of the Marmolada
mountain, the Queen of the Dolomites. Today it is a Natural
Reserve and it is open only to pedestrians and the small tourist
train in the summertime. Strolling in the alleys and between the
old barns of the characteristic hamlet of Sottoguda is an
unforgettable experience.
Serrai di Sottoguda: a stunning gorge with very high rock walls
which seem to touch each other at some points. A fascinating
and amazing natural wonder where the stream waters cross the
path 12 times flowing under the typical bridges... the waterfalls
rapidly flow down in spring after snow melting, and become icy
cathedrals in winter. And also, suggestive corners lead you to stop: the Virgin’s cave, the Crucifix, St.Anthony’s church.
And again... the calm whistling of the “Serrai Train” regularly draws your attention to take the visitors to discover this
wonder,
in a kind of legendary world, cherished by adults and children.

ICE CLIMBING
(from planetmountain.com)
Located at the foot of the Marmolada, between the village of Sottoguda and Malga Ciapela, the Serrai di Sottoguda are one
of the favorite areas in the Dolomites for ice climbing. The easy access and the great abundance of waterfalls make this
area extremely interesting for a “sports” approach to vertical ice.
Access:The gorge of Sottoguda can be easily reached. From Belluno, drive along the Val Cordevole through Agordo, Alleghe
and Caprile. Then take the road for Fedaia mountain pass and Malga Ciapela. Leave the main road few kilometres before
Malga Ciapela and take the road to Sottoguda. Cross the small village and go to the end of the road, as far as the canyon
mouth. Follow the path and in few minutes you will find the first waterfalls.
Difficoltā: the waterfalls in the gorge can satisfy
most ice climbers. Many itineraries are equipped
with spits at the stops and sometimes also along the
pitches. Difficulties go from the 2nd grade to the
5th superior, with many climbs of average or high
level. The waterfalls we suggest are the most
classical and aesthetical. Among these, the most
difficult is “The Sword in the Rock”, located below
the road bridge which connects Sottoguda with
Malga Ciapela.

Paesino di Sottoguda
A fabulous village in the heart of the Dolomites. An example of architectural preservation and traditional pride. With its ancient dwellings and its fascinating Tabiei (barns), Sottoguda can really be considered as a small jewel of our Territory. It is located at the foot of the Marmolada glacier, where you can ski all year long, near the canyon mouth, a natural wonder both in summer and in winter. Shy, small flowers hold somewhere on the grey rock, trees in all shades of green cling to its crags, and the soft musk embraces the stones near the stream. High icy waterfalls and thick snow blankets soften also the steepest walls where human eyes cannot even stick to in summer. And up there the climbers, who find their emotions in the vertical rocks.
These are our Serrai. Your calm strolling and your enchanted way back on your skis from the Sellaronda tour and from the Marmolada. Our background is made of the most majestic mountains of the Dolomites, as the Marmolada, the Civetta and the Pelmo. Most peaks, which have been declared UNESCO World Heritage, can be found here. Finally, our small village is near other charming places such as Cortina d’Ampezzo, Alleghe, Canazei, Arabba, etc.
